Maria Cantiello graduated in Law at the University of Modena, Italy, defending her thesis titled “Human Rights and Sexual Orientation: legal protection and open issues”, based on the result of a research period at the University of Antwerp. In 2012 she became a founding member of MoReGay, the LGBT student association of the University of Modena. Currently she is specializing in International Law and Human Rights at Tilburg University.
